7.6-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRUCK OFF THE NORTHERN COAST OF JAPAN, TSUNAMI ALERT ISSUED

Tokyo, December 8, 2025 (FNO): A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck off the northern coast of Japan late Monday night, triggering widespread panic and prompting authorities to issue an immediate tsunami alert across several coastal regions. The epicentre was located approximately 80 kilometres offshore from Aomori Prefecture on Honshu island, close to the southern edge of Hokkaido.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed that the earthquake occurred at a moderate depth beneath the seabed, intensifying the risk of tsunami formation. Within minutes of the tremor, emergency sirens were activated, and residents in low-lying coastal areas were urged to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution.

The violent tremor was felt across wide portions of Aomori, Iwate, and southern Hokkaido, causing buildings to sway, household items to topple, and power outages in several districts. Residents reported shaking that lasted for nearly 30 to 40 seconds, forcing people to rush outdoors in fear.

Following the quake, authorities issued a tsunami warning along Japan’s northern coastline. Coastal ports were immediately shut down, fishing operations suspended, and rail and ferry services temporarily halted. Emergency shelters were opened to accommodate evacuees, especially elderly residents and children.

Initial wave activity recorded minor surges along parts of the coastline, while officials warned that larger waves could still follow, urging citizens to remain in safe zones until the alert is officially lifted.

Japan’s disaster management agencies moved swiftly, setting up an emergency response headquarters in Tokyo. The government directed local administrations to begin damage assessments, search-and-rescue preparedness, and relief planning. Military disaster response units were also placed on standby.

As of the latest update, no confirmed fatalities have been officially reported. However, authorities stated that minor injuries have occurred due to falling objects and panic during evacuations. Structural inspections of older buildings, coastal infrastructure, and ports are currently underway.
