New Delhi: A dramatic revival of the southwest monsoon was captured from space on Wednesday as satellite imagery released by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) revealed thick rain-bearing clouds spreading across vast stretches of northern and central India. The development has raised hopes of a significant improvement in rainfall during July after an exceptionally dry June disrupted agricultural activities and intensified heatwave conditions across several regions.
Thermal infrared images recorded by ISRO's weather-monitoring satellites showed dense cloud bands extending from central India to the Indo-Gangetic plains. Meteorologists attributed the rapid expansion of cloud cover to an active monsoon circulation, strengthened by fresh low-pressure systems developing over the Bay of Bengal. The evolving weather pattern has already triggered widespread rainfall in many northern states, bringing much-needed relief from soaring temperatures.
The delayed arrival and sluggish progress of the southwest monsoon had resulted in one of the weakest June rainfall performances in over a century, creating concerns over water availability and delaying sowing operations for key kharif crops. Farmers across several states had been anxiously awaiting sustained rainfall to begin planting paddy, pulses and oilseeds.
Weather experts believe the renewed monsoon activity could help bridge the rainfall deficit during July, a crucial month for India's agricultural season. Consistent precipitation is expected to replenish reservoirs, improve soil moisture and support crop growth, while also easing pressure on groundwater resources.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued moderate to heavy rainfall over several parts of north, central and eastern India over the coming days. If the current momentum continues, the revived monsoon is expected to strengthen agricultural prospects, reduce heat stress and provide a much-needed boost to the country's overall water security during the remainder of the season.
