India and China held high-level discussions on maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) during a bilateral meeting between Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The meeting comes at a crucial time as both nations continue diplomatic and military-level engagements aimed at easing tensions along the disputed border regions following years of strained relations after the eastern Ladakh standoff.

According to official sources, the two leaders discussed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in border areas and stressed the need for continuous dialogue and effective communication between the armed forces of both countries. The talks also focused on restoring mutual trust and ensuring stability along the Line of Actual Control.

During the discussions, both sides exchanged views on key regional and global security challenges, including the evolving situation in West Asia, terrorism, maritime security and broader geopolitical developments affecting the region.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated India’s position that peace and stability along the border are essential for the overall development of bilateral relations between the two Asian neighbours. He reportedly emphasised that adherence to existing agreements and confidence-building measures remains critical for improving ties.

The interaction between the two ministers is being viewed as an important diplomatic engagement amid continuing efforts by India and China to normalize relations after prolonged military tensions in the Himalayan frontier areas.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting brought together defence ministers from member nations to discuss regional security cooperation, counter-terrorism measures and strategic coordination among participating countries.

Officials said the India-China dialogue on the sidelines of the summit reflected both nations’ willingness to maintain diplomatic engagement despite differences on border-related issues.

The Line of Actual Control has remained a sensitive issue in India-China relations, with several rounds of military and diplomatic talks held over the past few years to reduce tensions and prevent escalation in border areas.

Analysts believe that sustained communication between senior leadership and military officials will play a crucial role in ensuring long-term stability and avoiding confrontation along the frontier.
