HEAD-ON COLLISION BETWEEN TWO BUSES IN TAMIL NADU LEAVES DOZENS DEAD AND INJURED

States   |   Nov 30, 2025

Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu (FNO) -  At least 11 people were killed and nearly 40 others injured after two state-run buses collided head-on on Sunday evening near Thirupathur in Sivaganga district, in what officials described as one of the region’s worst road tragedies this year. Authorities confirmed that the deceased included several women and a child, with many passengers suffering severe injuries.

According to initial reports, the buses -  one travelling from Karaikudi and the other bound for Madurai -  crashed on a narrow, congested stretch of road, causing a devastating impact. The force of the collision left both vehicles badly mangled, trapping multiple passengers inside. Several victims died instantly, while others were pulled out with critical injuries.

Emergency teams, aided by local residents, launched a swift rescue operation. Survivors were rushed to hospitals in Sivaganga and Karaikudi, where medical teams have been placed on high alert. Officials said the toll could rise, as some passengers remain in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation has been initiated, with police examining possible causes including over-speeding, poor visibility, or driver fatigue. Authorities are also assessing road conditions on the stretch, which locals say has long been prone to accidents.

Meanwhile, traffic along the route remains partially disrupted as rescue personnel clear debris and secure the accident site. District officials have urged motorists to avoid the area until operations are fully complete.

The state government is expected to release an official statement later in the day, even as families of the victims gather at hospitals seeking updates on their loved ones
