New Delhi, June 3: A devastating fire that tore through a hotel building in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning claimed at least 21 lives and left dozens injured, prompting the Delhi Police to register a case of culpable homicide and launch a detailed investigation into possible negligence and safety violations.
The blaze erupted shortly before 9 a.m. in a multi-storey building housing a restaurant on the lower floor and hotel accommodations above. Within minutes, thick smoke and flames engulfed large sections of the structure, trapping guests inside and triggering a massive rescue operation involving firefighters, police personnel, and local residents.
According to officials, more than 40 people were rescued from the burning building and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several victims reportedly sustained severe burn injuries and smoke inhalation, while some desperate occupants were seen jumping from upper floors in an attempt to escape the rapidly spreading fire.
Authorities said a significant number of those killed were foreign nationals, mainly from Central Asian and African countries. Many of them were reportedly staying at the hotel while accompanying relatives receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals, a common practice in the area due to its proximity to major healthcare facilities.
Initial reports indicate that the deceased include visitors from countries such as Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique and Liberia. Officials are working with embassies and consular authorities to identify the victims and facilitate communication with their families.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under charges of culpable homicide and other relevant provisions of the law. Investigators are examining whether negligence, fire safety lapses or unauthorised construction contributed to the scale of the disaster.
Preliminary findings suggest the establishment may have been operating beyond its approved capacity. Reports indicate the property was licensed for only a limited number of rooms but was allegedly accommodating far more guests than permitted, raising serious concerns about compliance with fire and building regulations.
Officials are also investigating whether the fire originated in the restaurant located on the lower level of the building before spreading upward through the hotel floors. However, the exact cause of the blaze has not yet been officially confirmed.
The Delhi Fire Services deployed multiple fire engines and emergency response units to contain the inferno. Firefighters battled dense smoke and intense heat for several hours before bringing the situation under control. During the operation, several police personnel and emergency responders reportedly sustained injuries while evacuating trapped occupants.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as residents and bystanders joined rescue efforts, helping to move injured victims to safety and assisting emergency teams navigating the narrow lanes surrounding the building.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced financial assistance for the victims' families. An ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased victim, while those injured in the incident will receive ₹50,000.
The hotel fire is being viewed as one of the deadliest fire tragedies in Delhi in recent years. Authorities have sealed the premises and initiated a comprehensive inquiry into possible violations of fire safety norms, building regulations and licensing conditions. Forensic experts and fire department officials are expected to submit detailed reports in the coming days.
