ED Moves Calcutta High Court Seeking CBI FIR Against CM Mamata Banerjee After I-PAC Raid Row

Kolkata(FNO): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday approached the Calcutta High Court seeking directions for the registration of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) First Information Report against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, escalating the political and legal fallout from the recent controversy surrounding searches linked to Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC).

The move follows sharp political reactions after the ED conducted search operations in connection with an ongoing probe, which the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleged were aimed at influencing the electoral process in the state. TMC leaders claimed the searches were politically motivated and timed to coincide with the poll atmosphere in West Bengal, accusing central agencies of acting at the behest of the Union government.

Rejecting the allegations, the ED told the court that the searches had no connection whatsoever with elections and were carried out strictly in accordance with law as part of an independent financial investigation. The agency maintained that its actions were based on material evidence and statutory powers, and not influenced by political considerations.

In its petition before the High Court, the ED argued that serious issues had arisen during the course of the search operations, warranting a CBI inquiry and the registration of an FIR. The agency contended that judicial intervention was necessary to ensure a fair and impartial investigation into the alleged obstruction and controversy linked to the raid.

The legal development has intensified the already strained relationship between the Bengal government and central investigative agencies, a recurring flashpoint in state politics. While the TMC continues to project the action as an attack on federalism and democratic processes, the ED insists that the law must take its course without political colouring.

The Calcutta High Court is expected to hear the matter in the coming days, a decision that could have significant legal and political ramifications in the run-up to crucial electoral events in the state
