A Hindu youth was brutally lynched by a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district on Thursday night following allegations of blasphemy, according to local media reports and preliminary police statements.
The victim has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a resident of the area. Reports indicate that a group of people attacked him after accusations surfaced that he had made remarks deemed offensive to religious sentiments. The claims are yet to be independently verified.
Police officials said Dipu Chandra Das sustained severe injuries during the assault and later died. His body was recovered from the scene and sent for post-mortem examination. Authorities have launched a probe to establish the exact circumstances leading to the incident and to identify those involved.
The killing comes amid a tense security situation in parts of Bangladesh, where sporadic incidents of violence have raised concerns among minority communities. Human rights groups have repeatedly warned against mob justice, particularly in cases involving allegations of blasphemy, which often spread rapidly through rumours and social media.
Local administration officials said additional police forces were deployed in the area to prevent escalation and maintain law and order. “We are investigating all aspects of the case and will take legal action against those responsible,” a senior police officer said.
Minority rights activists and civil society members have condemned the incident, calling for swift arrests and stronger measures to prevent such violence. They stressed that allegations of blasphemy must be handled strictly through legal channels and not through vigilantism.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information.
