GREEN PIT VIPER SPOTTED IN PALAMU TIGER RESERVE; VILLAGERS ON ALERT

Palamu, Jharkhand- December 5, 2025 (FNO): A confirmed sighting of a venomous green pit viper in the Bareysarn range of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) on Thursday has triggered concern among nearby villagers, prompting forest authorities to issue an immediate caution advisory. The incident comes at a time when human-wildlife encounters are steadily increasing across Jharkhand’s forest belts.

Forest officials reported that the snake, estimated to be nearly four feet in length, was spotted during a routine patrol. The species is known for its hemotoxic venom, which can cause severe complications including blood-clotting disorders, intense tissue damage, swelling, and-if untreated-serious respiratory distress. While sightings of reptiles are not uncommon in PTR, confirmed appearances of green pit vipers remain relatively rare, making Thursday’s encounter noteworthy.

Local communities, many of whom depend on the forest for firewood, grazing and daily livelihood activities, expressed anxiety following the alert. Dense undergrowth and thick leaf litter in the region make the snake notoriously hard to detect, increasing the risk of accidental encounters-especially for villagers who walk barefoot or venture into the forest during early morning and evening hours.

Forest officials have urged residents to remain vigilant, wear protective footwear, avoid moving through tall grasses or fallen logs, and immediately report any further sightings. “Do not attempt to chase or disturb the snake. Let trained personnel handle the situation,” an official stressed.

Today’s sighting underscores the fragile balance between humans and wildlife in forest-fringe landscapes like Palamu. As dependence on forest resources continues, coexistence requires heightened awareness, community cooperation, and timely communication with authorities to ensure both public safety and the protection of wildlife.
