New Delhi (FNO) : In a landmark push toward technological self-reliance, the Union Cabinet on November 26, 2025, cleared a ₹7,280-crore national scheme to build India’s first integrated manufacturing ecosystem for Rare-Earth Permanent Magnets (REPMs) - a critical component of next-generation industries.
The ambitious programme will enable India to manufacture 6,000 MTPA of sintered REPMs, establishing a complete domestic value chain from rare-earth oxides to high-performance finished magnets.
REPMs are essential to modern industrial applications - powering electric vehicles (EVs), wind turbines, renewable-energy systems, aerospace platforms, defence systems, medical electronics, robotics and more. Until now, India has relied heavily on imports for these strategic components.
Officials said the move will cut import dependence, create high-value manufacturing jobs, boost supply-chain resilience, and accelerate India’s transition to a green and self-reliant industrial economy.
In essence, what India once imported will now be manufactured at home. With this first-of-its-kind REPM ecosystem, the country is positioning itself as an emerging global hub for advanced magnet production.
