RUSSIAN-FLAGGED OIL TANKER SEIZED IN NORTH ATLANTIC AFTER WEEKS-LONG CHASE

Washington, Jan 7, 2026: The United States military on Wednesday announced the seizure of a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic for alleged violations of international sanctions, bringing an end to a dramatic, multi-week pursuit across international waters.

The vessel, formerly known as Bella-1, had earlier evaded boarding attempts near the coast of Venezuela, triggering an extended tracking operation by American forces. According to US officials, the tanker was suspected of transporting sanctioned crude and using deceptive shipping practices to avoid detection.

Military sources said the ship was intercepted and taken into custody following coordinated naval and aerial surveillance. No injuries were reported during the operation, and the crew has been secured for further investigation.

US authorities stated that the seizure underscores Washington’s commitment to enforcing sanctions and countering illicit maritime trade. Further details regarding the cargo, ownership structure, and possible legal proceedings are expected to be released in the coming days.

The incident highlights growing scrutiny of global shipping routes amid ongoing efforts to curb sanctions evasion on the high seas.
