Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh), April 23:** At least 11 people were killed in a devastating multi-vehicle collision in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district on Wednesday night, officials confirmed.
The accident occurred around 8:30 PM near Barka Ghuman Bhaisod Balay Pahad, under the jurisdiction of the Drumandganj police station. According to police, a speeding truck rammed into a car, an SUV, and a trailer, triggering a chain-reaction crash. The impact caused the car and SUV to burst into flames, intensifying the tragedy.
Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot soon after receiving the alert. With the assistance of local villagers, rescue operations were launched immediately to pull out victims from the mangled and burning vehicles.
Senior district officials, including the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, visited the site to assess the situation and oversee relief efforts. Authorities said that 11 fatalities have been confirmed so far, while details of the victims are still being compiled.
In a statement, the Mirzapur police said traffic movement in the area has since been restored and remains smooth. Further legal proceedings are underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the accident. He announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.
The cause of the collision is yet to be determined, and an investigation has been initiated.
