India Set for Leadership Change as Suryakumar Yadav Removed as T20 Captain

NEW DELHI: In a major shake-up to India’s T20 setup, reigning World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly been removed from the leadership role just three months after guiding India to the T20 World Cup title on home soil. The decision is also expected to impact his place in the national side, with indications that he may no longer be a regular selection in the shortest format.

The move comes ahead of India’s upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England later this month, marking the beginning of a new T20 cycle for the national team.

According to sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the decision was taken following consultations between the selection committee, team management and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The board is now expected to appoint a new captain to lead the team going forward.

A senior BCCI official stated that while India enjoyed considerable success under Suryakumar’s leadership, including the T20 World Cup triumph, selectors felt the team required a fresh direction for the next phase of international competition.

“Under Surya’s captaincy, the team won the T20 World Cup, but after assessing his recent form and long-term plans, the management believes it is the right time to move on with a new leader,” the official was quoted as saying.

The decision signals the start of a transition period for India’s T20 side as the team begins preparations for future ICC tournaments. With a new captain set to take charge, attention will now shift to who will lead the next generation of Indian cricketers in the shortest format.

An official announcement regarding the new captain is expected in the coming days as selectors finalize the squad for the Ireland and England tours.
