NIA Arrests American & Six Ukrainians in Major Crackdown

Kolkata:

In a significant counter-terror operation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested an American national at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata, along with six Ukrainian nationals from Lucknow and Delhi. The arrests are linked to an alleged international conspiracy involving extremist activities with possible cross-border implications.

The case has drawn serious attention from intelligence agencies due to the involvement of a foreign national and suspected international connections. While no official confirmation has been made, the development has sparked discussions around possible foreign intelligence links, adding a new dimension to the investigation.

The American national has been identified as Matthew VanDyke, who, according to investigators, has a history of involvement in conflict zones such as Libya, Ukraine, and parts of Latin America. Authorities believe his background and international exposure may be relevant to the case, and further details are being closely examined.

The arrests were made on March 17 in a carefully coordinated operation conducted across multiple locations. While VanDyke was detained at the Kolkata airport, the six Ukrainian nationals were simultaneously apprehended from Lucknow and Delhi. Officials indicate that the operation was based on specific intelligence inputs and involved close monitoring over a period of time.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused were part of a broader network allegedly aimed at supporting extremist groups, particularly those operating from Myanmar. The region has long been considered sensitive due to insurgent activity and its proximity to India’s eastern borders.

Authorities are probing whether the group was involved in providing logistical support, communication channels, or other forms of assistance to such organizations.

One of the key aspects under investigation is a possible drone-related plot. Sources indicate that modern technology may have been intended for use in unlawful activities, raising concerns about emerging methods being adopted by such networks. However, officials have not yet disclosed detailed findings on this front.

Following these arrests, security agencies across the country have heightened surveillance, particularly in border regions. The involvement of foreign nationals and links to international conflict zones have made this case especially sensitive.

The NIA has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. Authorities are also examining financial trails, digital communications, and possible connections with other operatives.

This operation highlights the growing complexity of global terror networks and their potential reach into India. With multiple countries and sensitive regions involved, the case is being treated as a high-priority investigation.
