Kanpur: In a major crackdown on food adulteration, district authorities in Kanpur have seized thousands of litres of counterfeit ghee during a raid conducted in the Panki area. Officials said the operation exposed a large-scale illegal manufacturing unit producing fake ghee using adulterated oils and synthetic essences, posing a serious threat to public health.

According to officials from the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA), the unit was operating under a false identity to evade detection. The counterfeit ghee was allegedly being packaged and sold for both household consumption and religious purposes, including use in puja rituals.

The action was carried out following sustained surveillance by the food department’s monitoring team, which had been tracking suspicious activity linked to the facility for several weeks. Based on intelligence inputs and preliminary findings, a joint team conducted the raid and recovered large quantities of finished and semi-processed fake ghee, along with raw materials used in its production.

Machinery, containers, and packaging materials were also seized from the premises.

Officials confirmed that samples of the seized ghee have been sent to a government laboratory in Lucknow for detailed analysis. The tests will determine the exact composition, extent of adulteration, and presence of any harmful substances.

Authorities stated that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in the manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit food products. Cases will be registered under relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act, which carries stringent penalties, including imprisonment and heavy fines.

The district administration reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and warned traders against engaging in adulteration or misbranding of food items.

Officials also urged consumers to remain cautious while purchasing ghee and other edible products, advising them to buy only from trusted sources and check proper labeling and certification.
