East Midnapore, West Bengal (FNO): Popular Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty was allegedly harassed during a live performance at a private school in East Midnapore district, prompting swift police action and the arrest of the accused.

According to the singer, the incident occurred while she was performing on stage when a man from the audience began verbally abusing her. The accused allegedly shouted, “No more ‘Jago Maa’, sing secular songs,” disrupting the programme and creating panic among attendees.

The singer further alleged that the man attempted to physically assault her before security personnel and organisers intervened. The situation escalated briefly, forcing the organisers to halt the performance and seek police assistance.

The accused has been identified as Mehboob Mallik, a local resident. He was detained by the police shortly after the incident and later arrested based on the complaint filed by the singer.

Police officials said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code related to harassment, criminal intimidation, and attempt to assault. “The matter is being investigated, and necessary legal action has been initiated,” a senior police officer said.

Lagnajita Chakraborty later shared details of the incident, expressing concern over the safety of artists during public performances. She stated that such incidents not only threaten personal safety but also undermine freedom of artistic expression.

The incident has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with fellow artists, cultural groups, and members of the public condemning the act and demanding stricter security measures at live events.

Organisers of the programme said they are cooperating fully with the authorities and assured that enhanced security protocols will be followed for future events.

Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
